dermal fillers

Facial wrinkles and creases begin to appear as the underlying collagen and elastin fibres begin to break down and wear out after the age of 25. While this breakdown is part of the natural ageing process, it can also result from excessive squinting, frowning, smoking or sun damage.

Dermal fillers give you immediate and visible results, taking years off your face, and leaving your skin smooth and supple. They can be done quickly and easily, even during your lunch hour, with no invasive surgery and little recovery time.

Dermal fillers are gels that can be injected into ageing skin to smooth out folds and creases and so restore a youthful appearance.

The skin naturally consists of structural materials that include several types of collagen, plus lubricants such as hyaluronic acid (HA), giving us a firm, toned and youthful skin. As the body ages, the quantity of these critical materials naturally declines, resulting in poorer skin quality..

Injection into the skin of synthetically produced HA and/or natural collagens can restore the skin to a more youthful appearance. They do this by plumping up deep wrinkles and skin folds, making the skin firmer, as well as by building up and sculpting facial contours. These injectable materials are collectively known as dermal fillers.

What are dermal fillers?

Today, the most widely used dermal fillers consist of synthetic HA. Their effects are considered to be non-permanent, but they do last 9-12 months.

Many different types of filler are in use today, but only some of them deliver consistently safe, effective longterm results, with minimal side-effects. A selection of fillers will be tailored to your needs. These include the following brands:

Emervel is a scientifically advanced and sophisticated range of softer hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, which are formulated through a unique process called Optimal Balance Technology™.

The Emervel range currently consists of five different formulations, called Touch, Lips, Classic, Deep, and Volume, and as a result is versatile, providing a product that is tailored to individual treatment needs, from softening lines and wrinkles to increasing volume, lifting and shaping contours.

Emervel is designed to maximise patient comfort, and therefore has 0.3% lidocaine included with the hyaluronic acid gels as a local anaesthetic.

The Stylage fillers are a full range of monophasic fillers used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, folds and hollows. They have a natural and smoothing correction quality, showing excellent and persistent long-lasting results.

They are a filler range based on IPN (interpenetrated networks) technology which increases their longevity. Included with the Stylage is mannitol, a natural anti-oxidant and thermal stabiliser, which drastically slows the post-injection breakdown of the filler caused by free radicals both produced during the procedure and generated by other causes such as smoking, pollution and sunlight in the months following treatment.

Juvéderm Ultra®:
This consists of a range of gels with a smooth consistency. They restore lost volume, fill in lines, wrinkles and folds in the face, neck and hands, rehydrate the skin, enhance lip volume and redefine the lips.

Ultra contains lidocaine, a local anaesthetic which makes the treatment more comfortable, and is not granular, ensuring that it flows easily into the skin when injected. A smooth and natural appearance results.

Two forms of Juvederm Ultra are Smile and Hydrate, the former optimised for lip enhancement, the latter for face and hand hydration, as well as skin tone and elasticity improvement.

This consists of calcium-based microspheres and a gel that upon injection provide immediate volume and lift. It is a unique product as it acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing a structure that stimulates the production of your body’s own collagen. The process continues for several months, with the results achieving facial and hand rejuvenation for more than a year.

What is involved?

As with all my treatments, the first step is for me to take your medical history, to make sure there are no issues in your health that could make this treatment ill-advised. You will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form.

For your personal comfort,Berlinde applies an anaesthetic cream 30 minutes prior to injection of the filler. Once the area is anaesthetised, the filler is carefully injected into the treatment area. When Radiesse is injected lidocaine is used as an anaesthetic and mixed with the filler. No topical anaesthetic cream is necessary. The effects are immediate. You will be able to return to normal daily activities (except sport) immediately.

Depending on the site and depth of the wrinkles to be treated, the most appropriate product will be chosen and injected into the right skin level. The treatment session lasts about 30-60 minutes.

Possible side-effects

You may experience temporary bruising, redness and swelling after your treatment. This can be disguised with a concealer.

In very rare cases, an allergic reaction can occur following a filler injection. I will discuss this fully with you prior to your treatment.

Fillers are typically used for:

Fillers & the results

These products are all hyaluronic acid based (non-animal fillers) which are used to replenish lost volume in the skin, smoothing out lines and wrinkles thus helping to erase the signs of ageing without resorting to surgery.

They are slowly absorbed, allowing the treatments for last for up to one year. The Juvederm product range (which can last for up to 18 months), contains an anaesthetic which makes it far more comfortable than other fillers.

With dermal fillers you can banish deep wrinkles, remodel your face to add volume when the cheeks become sunken, augment your chin and rehydrate your skin deep down. You can plump and redefine your lips too. Sometimes they are used in conjunction with Botox.

lip enhancement

This is when the outside border of your lips (vermilion border) is enhanced by dermal filler. This gives your lips a better definition and a more sensual look, and reduces lipstick bleed

lip augmentation

Lip size and shape can be enhanced by dermal fillers, giving greater volume and a fuller appearance to your lips.

Nasolabial folds

These are the deep folds that run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth. This is the first sign of ageing. Correction or softening of these folds gives you a youthful fresher look.

lip creases

These occur with age, and are not just the result of smoking. Softening the depth of these with a dermal filler enhances you face and prevents lipstick seepage.

jowls enhancement

Saggy jowls accentuate the effect of the ageing process. This appearance can be easily corrected by a dermal filler and gives you a smooth jaw line.

tear trough & dark shadows under the eyes

It is said that the eyes are the windows to the face and soul! Unsightly sunken tear troughs and dark shadows under the eyes can now be corrected, giving a smooth filled out appearance under the lower eyelids. This latest nip/tweak technique promises a faster less invasive way to beautiful eyes.

cheek & chin lifting and filling

Fillers are used to restore volume to chin, cheeks, and cheekbones that have become hollow or thin due to weight loss or age-related facial fat loss. Immediately after treatment, you should notice that your facial contours appear fuller and rounder, giving your face a softer, more youthful appearance.
Depending on your course of treatment you may notice a return of the soft, full cheeks, and firm, high cheekbones of youth, a refreshing revolumisation of the face, and a marked return of the smooth jowls and
jawline and the firm chin of youth,

And, your results will last—the lifting effects of treatment  have been shown to last up to 18 months!

Before & After Photos:

I had Botox injections to smooth my frown lines, to lift my eyes a little and to lift my lips at the corners. I also had some dermal filler in the lines between my nose and mouth.
