Dietitian & Psychotherapist
Since qualifying as a Dietitian, I’ve worked in research environments and within the National Health Service for several years covering a variety of specialties in both adults and children, including gastrointestinal disorders and eating disorders.
Registered Dietitians are monitored by the Health Professions Council (HPC) and are uniquely qualified to translate scientific information about food into practical dietary advice. As well as providing impartial advice about nutrition and health, dietitians can also advise about food related problems and treat disease and ill health.
As a dietitian, I am aware that eating is often about so much more than food. In certain conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and eating disorders, a healthy eating plan can only be achieved by first exploring the reason as to why people eat too little or too much and then identify alternative approaches to resolve these issues.
Dietary advice mainly focuses on the foods eaten and rarely looks at the underlying problems. I recognised that by combining dietetics and psychotherapy, I would be able to offer a more integrated approach, providing dietary advice and support to help people to resolve the emotional issues around eating and achieve long term dietary changes. With this in mind I undertook training in psychotherapy to complement my dietetics and in 2002 set up CAREFREE EATING and I now provide this service at Southernhay Clinic
Over the years I have also developed an interest in Sports Nutrition, working closely with cyclists, runners and triathlons, providing personalised nutritional advice during training and events. In addition, I am in the process of studying an MSc in Weight Management with Sports Nutrition to ensure that I give up to date and informed advice.
