what is skin repair needling therapy?

Both the Dermaroller and Dermapen are devices that contain clusters of micro-surgical precision needles used to stimulate damaged skin. The tiny needles come in various sizes, on the Dermaroller rotating on a roller that is pushed across the skin, and on the Dermapen moving vertically in response to a button. They can penetrate the skin to various controlled depths, upto a maximum of 2.5mm.

This micro-needling stimulates skin regeneration and rejuvenation, and scar repair, causing the skin to produce more collagen, the skin’s basic building block. Stimulation of collagen production in this way results in a younger, fresher, healthier, firmer, more vibrant skin appearance. With the treatment of scars (such as those resulting from acne or psoriasis) scar healing and reduction are promoted.

The reasons to start skin needling treatment include having lines, wrinkles or pigmentation caused by sun damage, acne scars or stretch marks (such as caused by pregnancy or other sudden changes in weight).

A treatment course consists of 3-5 sessions, with six weeks between each session. The Dermaroller is used for the treatment of general skin ageing and damage, and can be continued at home. The Dermapen, however, is more effective in treating pitted, scarred skin, and can be applied only by Dr Berlinde.

Excess sun exposure following the treatment should be avoided. A total sunblock is applied when the treatment is finished.

Carboxy & oxygen therapies

Carboxy therapy consists of the injection of pure carbon dioxide under the skin, while oxygen therapy involves the application of pure oxygen directly onto the skin surface, from where it can be absorbed by the skin tissues. These two treatment processes can be used to treat a whole range of conditions.

Poor Blood Supply

There is one single factor that unites many conditions resulting from difficulties the body has in repairing injury or ageing-related damage. This single factor is poor blood supply, particularly when it applies to peripheral areas, 'remote' parts of the body's skin or joints.  Poor blood flow in ageing or injured parts of the body results in insufficient supply of oxygen, making it impossible for the affected tissues to carry out the constant repairs necessary to keep the body functioning well. This results in the general increase in aches and pains as we age, along with an increasing length of time it takes for injuries to heal.

Oxygen to repair damaged tissues

Anything we can do to promote the flow of oxygen to damaged tissues should help to speed up repair and recovery. Clearly, the direct application of oxygen should have an immediate beneficial effect, but it has to be administered carefully in order to be safe.

It is, however, perfectly safe to inject carbon dioxide into the tissues. Carbon dioxide is normally a waste product that the body works to remove as quickly as possible, so its sudden appearance will stimulate the body to radically improve the blood supply to the affected area, not only removing that excess carbon dioxide but simultaneously bringing in oxygen dissolved in the blood. 

This of course takes time, and to be effective will require several treatment sessions, but over a period of a few weeks the blood circulation to a treated area can be massively improved, resulting in naturally improved supply of oxygen to the tissues, thus enabling repair of any damage.

Botox

Botox is one of the best known and popular non-surgical treatments for treating lines and wrinkles caused by smiling, laughing and frowning.

Clients often complain of unsightly lines and wrinkles on the face, or are told that they look worried or miserable because of them. In particular these are the frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead creases and the smile lines at the outer corners of the eyes – the crow’s feet. Botox injections give rapid and dramatic results that will take years off you.

The skin is like a piece of paper; if it creased too many times the creases become permanent so it is important to start treatments before the wrinkles become permanent.

The treatment is a prescription only medicine (PoM) that must be prescribed by a doctor and requires specialist cosmetic training to administer. The injections are carried out using the finest of needles. The treatment is safe and results are visible within three to seven days. The effects last a few months, on average around 4 months after which the treatment can be topped up for the wonderful benefits to continue. If you have your first top-ups within 4 months, the time between treatments starts to increase, giving longer lasting results of up to 6-10 months.

For such sufferers a solution is at hand in the form of Botox injections. More commonly associated with aesthetic treatments to reduce skin wrinkling, injections of Botox at certain 'trigger points' can also block the sweating triggers, greatly reducing the levels of perspiration.

Microsclerotherapy – treatment for leg veins

Leg veins can be a distressing condition, preventing many women from wearing shorts, skirts or summer dresses. These can be removed.

Dr. Simona offers a process called microsclerotherapy. This is a minimally invasive method to remove unwanted leg veins.

It involves injections with a very fine needle of a sclerosing drug which  irritates  the lining of the veins causing the walls to stick together. Blood stops flowing through the veins, which are then absorbed by the body over a period of  a few weeks. The blood is directed back to the deeper veins.

One of the simplest routes to a healthy, more youthful skin is the daily taking of a collagen-rich nutritional drink. Two products are available, called Skinade and Totally Derma, each with rather different collagen and nutritional formulations, but both are highly effective. Not only do they deliver new collagen directly to the skin, but they also stimulate the body to produce new collagen of its own, greatly enhancing the skin's connective tissue structure, resulting in a smoother, more supple surface.
